A Collector’s Point of View: Terry Bridges

On Thursday, October 22, 2015, Terry Bridges came to the AD&A Museum to speak about his experience as an art collector of over thirty years. His growing collections include works by Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Alexander Calder, Marc Chagall, and Fernand Leger.

Bridges discussed his process of accumulating his paintings, explaining that he often decides to buy new works based on his and his wife Sharon’s personal memories that are associated with it. The Bridges have dispersed some of their collections to the AD&A Museum, as well as the Norton Simon Museum.

The discussion was focused mainly on the love and joy Bridges feels toward individual paintings, rather than seeing art collecting as a financial investment. He emphasized the use of art for healing, and encouraged the event attendees to collect art themselves, even if it is local art from unknown artists or simply an image that gives them joy to see every day.
